Antoine Vollon (French, 1833-1900) Portrait of a Man, c. 1878
Oil on canvas, 29 x 23-1/2 in.
Signed at lower left: A. Vollon.
August Heckscher Collection.  1959.158

Although best known for his still life paintings, which were compared to Chardin, Antoine Vollon also executed landscapes and figure works. He was especially influenced by Spanish and Dutch art, and was admired by his contemporaries, including the American William Merritt Chase whose 1912 and 1917 studio sales included twenty works by Vollon. Portrait of a Man depicts a model in the pose of a self-portrait, and it is most likely a preliminary work to the full-length portrait of the same model, L'Espagnol (The Spaniard) in the collection of the Louvre. Executed in a dark palette typical of Spanish painting, Portrait of a Man reveals the vigorous brushwork and spontaneous technique characteristic of Vollon.
