About This Work

Berne-Bellecour was a successful painter and regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon. His paintings, inspired by the events of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, were especially popular, appealing to French pride and nationalism. The subject of this work, considered one of his masterpieces, is the departure of a regiment from a railway station.
