Members & Donors Virtual Program with Rachel Mustalish, Ph.D., Conservator

Guest speaker Rachel Mustalish, Ph.D., provides a fascinating look into her expertise in the conservation of artworks, particularly those on paper. In addition, she speaks about her original research on the work of American modernist Arthur Dove, who was featured in the exhibition, Salt Life: Arthur Dove and Helen Torr, on view at The Heckscher Museum from November 18, 2023 through March 10, 2024.
Dr. Rachel Mustalish is the Sherman Fairchild Conservator in Charge, Paper Conservation, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She works on drawings and prints across the Met’s collection with specializations in European and American modernism, international contemporary art, and prints. Her work focuses on treatment, examination, and research of materials and techniques used by artists. She teaches and lectures internationally and is a fellow of both the American Institute for Conservation and International Institute for Conservation. She received her BA in art history and environmental science from Wesleyan University, a MA in the history of art and a certificate of advanced study in conservation from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and a Ph.D. from the Courtauld Institute, University of London.

Dr. Nathalie Lachmann is the Curator of 19th and 20th century art at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in Germany. The Heckscher Museum’s masterwork, Eclipse of the Sun by George Grosz, was on view as part of the Staatsgalerie’s important exhibition The Glitz and Venom of the Twenties: George Grosz in Berlin from November 19, 2022 – February 26, 2023. Un Espagnol by A. Vollon, with Dr. Carol Forman Tabler

Dr. Carol Tabler discusses what she has discovered about Un Espagnol by A. Vollon and how it relates to one of Vollon’s most important works in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. Her research on this artist for the catalogue of The Heckscher Museum’s collection developed into her PhD dissertation at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
Intimate Coast: Helen Torr’s Huntington

Between 1923 and 1933, artist Helen Torr lived and painted alongside her husband Arthur Dove on the water and on the land of the north shore of Long Island. This talk with Art Historian and Lecturer Erin Kimmel considers her idiosyncratic and important output in relation to the ecological and social history of Huntington Harbor.

Curators in Conversation: Wood Gaylor and American Modernism

Virtual Gallery Talk with Exhibiting Artist Amanda Valdez

The Heckscher Museum of Art was proud to present a Virtual Gallery Talk featuring artist Amanda Valdez and Curator Karli Wurzelbacher, exclusively for current Museum Members and Sponsors. Valdez creates brilliantly colored, patterned, and textured abstract paintings by cutting, sewing, dying, painting, and embroidering canvas and other cloth. She conjures surprising compositions through thoughtful use of different materials and modes of making.
