Art Without Barriers: Celebrating the ADA

Free Community Event in the Museum & Heckscher Park

Join us for this free community event celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)!  This gathering was created in collaboration with Heckscher Museum’s Accessibility Advisory Group and welcomes everyone. It was created with and for the Deaf community, blind and low vision community, individuals with developmental disabilities, people who are neurodivergent, and people of all ages and abilities.

Enjoy a vibrant selection of hands-on and interactive art activities and sensory experiences designed for all types of learners both inside the Museum and outside in beautiful Heckscher Park. Whether through touch, sight, sound, movement, or creative expression, there’s something meaningful for every participant to explore, create and connect.

 

Activities:

  • 12:30 & 2:30 pm: Readings of children’s books in ASL with Susie Sussman and Dawn DeRisi and learn how to sign the Pledge of Allegiance
  • 12:30 pm: Enjoy several magic tricks by Deaf magician Steve Weiner 
  • 1:30 & 3:30 pm: Tours in ASL of the exhibition Just Powers: Long Island Biennial 2026 
  • Touch items generously loaned by exhibiting artists
  • Surprise art boxes created by artist Joan Kim Suzuki
  • Objects from the collection of the Museum of Disability History 
  • Meet and create textile art project with LI Biennial artist Eileen Shaloum
  • Spirit of Huntington Art Center’s Sensory Station
  • Meet and learn about the artwork of Deaf artist Charles Wildbank
  • Get inspired by the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence
