Become a Docent

BECOME A DOCENT

What is a Docent?

The word docent derives from the Latin docere, which means to teach. Docent volunteers are a vital part of the Museum’s Education & Visitor Experience Department. Docents bring artwork on view to life for museum visitors of all ages. Enthusiasm, a desire to learn, and strong communication skills are just a few of the valuable characteristics of an effective docent. At The Museum, docents play a variety of roles including acting as Docents-in-the-Gallery to answer visitor questions, leading tours, and assisting Museum staff at public programs.

Who can become a Docent?

Docents come from many different backgrounds and experiences. A degree in art history, studio art, or a related field is NOT required. What is most important is to have a love of art, a love of learning, and a love of sharing with others! The Museum always welcomes new docents to join the team and hosts Meet & Greet events for those interested in learning more.
