Juneteenth Freedom Day

Saturday, June 21, 2025
3 – 6 pm

The Heckscher Museum is happy to be part of this community event held in Heckscher Park and also to stay open late until 6 pm in coordination with this special day! Juneteenth Freedom Day celebrates African American culture, history, and achievements, while also acknowledging the ongoing necessity to remain resilient in the ongoing fight against systemic racism and injustice. Come celebrate Freedom. Come celebrate Juneteenth. Come home to Huntington where history is not forgotten, it’s celebrated! The day will include: historical reflections, music, dancing, food trucks, giveaways, raffles, cultural experiences and much, much more throughout the day. Bring lawn chairs!

Meet and work with local artist Alan Cooley! In honor of Juneteenth, Alan will provide family-friendly art activities inspired by newly acquired works of art by Mikalene Thomas and Wardell Milan. Create a unique “glittery” collage celebrating freedom, positivity, unity and culture!

Alan Cooley is a visual artist and educator from Huntington Station, New York, whose passion for art began at an early age through creating comic books and illustrations for friends and family. His work is deeply influenced by both realism and imaginative themes, drawing inspiration from nature, human behavior, mythology, comic books, and music.

A lifelong learner, Alan later pursued formal artistic training at Nassau Community College, where he refined his technical skills and honed his ability to bring fantastical concepts to life with realism and precision. In addition to his practice as an artist, Alan has extensive experience working with children in educational and recreational settings, including summer and after-school programs.

Alan is passionate about fostering creativity in young people through art instruction and collaborative storytelling, and he continually finds inspiration in the imagination and energy of the students he teaches. Alan remains committed to using art as a vehicle for both personal expression and community engagement.
