In Partnership with the Huntington African American Museum
On Saturday, June 20, join the Heckscher Museum of Art and the Huntington African American Museum at Heckscher Park for the Town of Huntington’s Juneteenth Freedom Day celebration!
Together, we are hosting a community portrait studio inspired by the legacy of James VanDerZee, one of the most celebrated photographers of the Harlem Renaissance, whose work captured the beauty, dignity, and pride of Black life in America. Stop by our station to create your own contemporary portrait in that same spirit, celebrating family, community, and joy.
Serving as the backdrop for your portrait is a large-scale reproduction of Mama Taught Me Piano and Much More by artist Robert Carter from the Heckscher Museum’s collection, a powerful and tender work that speaks directly to the themes of legacy, love, and intergenerational connection at the heart of Juneteenth.
Kids and families are also invited to create their own artwork of a loved one inspired by Carter’s painting, completing the phrase “____ Taught Me ____ and Much More!” to make something personal, meaningful, and all their own.
Featuring photography by Danangelowe A.J Spencer from DAJS Visuals!
Share your portrait on social media and tag us at @HeckscherMuseum and @HAFAMMuseum to celebrate with your community!
