First Dia de los Muertos Celebration Draws Community

The Heckscher Museum’s first Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration welcomed more than 100 visitors to learn about the tradition and create festive art. Families decorated a colorful altar in the Museum lobby where they left thoughtful messages and artwork to remember loved ones.

The Town of Huntington Hispanic Advisory Committee, who collaborated on the event, led a presentation on how various countries around the world bring their own unique take on the holiday.  Kids at the celebration made colorful paper flowers, sugar skulls, frames, and more.  The family celebration took place on October 28, with additional opportunities for visitors to place altar decorations on October 29, and November 2.
