Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) at The Heckscher Museum abounds with great art, creative artmaking, and culminates in a joyous all-community celebration for Dia de los Muertos. Here are some of the ways to celebrate the culture and join in the fun.
–Visit Eclipse of the Sun Now, opening Saturday, September 26, 2026. The exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of George Grosz’s political masterpiece in the Heckscher Museum’s collection. This exhibition explores the painting’s enduring message alongside politically engaged art created over the last century. This includes impactful artwork from world renowned Hispanic artists: Rufino Tamayo, Felix Gonzales-Torres, Ana Mendieta, and more. 12 to 5 pm, Free admission.
–Join the Conversation at Heckscher Museum Night at The Standard
Saturday, September 26, 7 to 11 pm, The Standard, East Village at Cuna Bar & Lounge, 25 Cooper Square, NYC. Free.
Celebrate the opening weekend of Eclipse of the Sun Now. The evening will bring together artists, cultural organizers, and community voices for a conversation about the Latinx artists featured in the exhibition and their connections to contemporary Hispanic and Latino/a artists. Panelists will use artists’ work to speak about identity, immigration, politics, culture, and the issues affecting their communities. Heckscher Executive Director Heather Arnet will join members of Action Lab, Flower Shop Collective, and other guests to explore these connections through the work of artists past and present. –Do the Huntington Village Art Walk, Sunday, October 4, 2026, 12 to 5, Free. Explore the exhibition Eclipse of the Sun Now as well as a special display of award-winning student artwork in the 2026 Huntington Hispanic Heritage First Annual Art Contest in collaboration with the Town of Huntington Hispanic Advisory Task Force. The juried art contest was inspired by the official National Hispanic Heritage theme: Together, we are more. Unidos, somos mas.
–Enjoy the Día de los Muertos Family Celebration, Sunday, November 1, 2026 12 to 5 pm. Free. Families are invited to celebrate and learn about how this holiday is celebrated around the world. Meet and create works of art inspired by this celebration with artists Filiberto Perez-Mendoza, who will be designing this year’s ofrenda, as well as artists Sueey Gutierrez and Manuel Alejandro Macarrulla. Bring your own photographs or other personal items to leave at the ofrenda to honor and remember your loved ones. Activities throughout the day will include Mexican style calaveras, maraca decorating, maskmaking, face painting, flower crowns, and more!
Vibrant Mariachi music will be performed throughout the day! Enjoy complimentary churros, pan de muertos, hot chocolate, and coffee donated by The Oaxaca Restaurant, Mac Bounce Party Rentals, the Town of Huntington Institute of Human Services, and Bond St. Coffee and Goods! Plan your day:
