The Heckscher Museum has acquired four works by renowned artist and photographer Frank Stewart.
Born in Nashville in 1949, Stewart has spent the last five decades photographing African American culture – from the streets of Harlem to the piano keys of jazz legend Ahmad Jamal. His photographs of the many aspects and rituals of Black culture, explored through the senses of touch, sound, and taste, suggest the joys and pains of everyday life.
With a Kodak Brownie camera in hand, fourteen-year-old Stewart took some of his first images at the Great March on Washington in 1963. In 1982, he was invited to join the Kamoinge Workshop, a group of Black artists committed to photographing Black life. Stewart photographed the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, and since 1992, he has served as the lead photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center.
In October 2025, the Museum was thrilled to welcome Stewart to the galleries as he delivered and signed four striking photographs.
