Artists of the Stieglitz Circle: Dove, Marin, O’Keeffe, and Others

In celebration of the Museum’s recent acquisition of John Marin’s Huntington, Long Island No. 1, 1952, this Permanent Collection exhibition places Marin in the context of the early American modernists championed by legendary gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz. In the years before and after the famed International Exhibition of Modern Art, known as the Armory Show (1913), Stieglitz produced a remarkable series of exhibitions featuring the most progressive European and American art to be seen in America at that time. He was deeply committed to American artists and sought to define an authentic American art that expressed contemporary American life. Works by Oscar Bluemner, Arthur B. Carles, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Alfred Maurer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Steichen, Abraham Walkowitz, and Max Weber will be included, as well as works by Huntington residents Arthur Dove and Helen Torr.
