Activities in partnership with the Huntington African American Museum
at JUNETEENTH FREEDOM DAY in Heckscher Park
presented by The Huntington Juneteenth Committee

Saturday, June 20, 2026
3 – 6 pm

Join The Heckscher Museum and the Huntington African American Museum at Heckscher Park for the Town of Huntington’s Juneteenth Freedom Day celebration! Together, we are hosting a community portrait studio inspired by the legacy of James VanDerZee, one of the most celebrated photographers of the Harlem Renaissance, whose work captured the beauty, dignity, and pride of Black life in America. Stop by our station to create your own contemporary portrait in that same spirit, celebrating family, community, and joy. Featuring photography by Danangelowe A.J Spencer from DAJS Visuals.

Serving as the backdrop for your portrait is a large-scale reproduction of Mama Taught Me Piano and Much More by artist Robert Carter from the Heckscher Museum’s collection, a powerful and tender work that speaks directly to the themes of legacy, love, and intergenerational connection at the heart of Juneteenth. Kids and families are invited to create their own artwork of a loved one inspired by Carter’s painting, completing the phrase ____ Taught Me ____ and Much More!” to make something personal, meaningful, and all their own.

SUMMER COMMUNITY DINNER
Art + Community = Democracy

Friday, June 26, 2026
5 – 8 pm

Inspired by the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the Museum’s 100th Anniversary of Eclipse of the Sun by George Grosz, this community dinner brings people from all walks of life together around a shared table for an open and welcoming conversation on shared experiences, art, civic life, and freedom under the summer stars.

This evening will feature cuisine from Kabul Afghan Restaurant, which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy foods and flavors that reflect the many cultures and communities of Long Island. The Museum will also offer extended gallery hours, with select Biennial artists in the galleries from 5-6 pm to speak with visitors near their artwork and share insights into their creative practices. From 6-8 pm, everyone is invited to gather for a community dinner outside the Museum. Seating and meals will be available while supplies last. Whether you come with friends, family, or on your own, we warmly welcome you to pull up a chair, share a meal, and connect with others through art, conversation, and togetherness.

Pay-What-You-Wish, All Are Welcome!
